BROWNSBORO'S SEASON ENDS ON RUNNER'S INTERFERENCE CALL
Brownsboro’s season came to an end in heartbreaking fashion Thursday night at Mike Carter Field.
Down 1-0 in the top of the seventh inning, Brownsboro had runners on first and third with one out. Hayden Woods hit a grounder to the shortstop Jackson Cobb, who flipped the ball to ball to Parker Twisdale for the second out.
Woods reached first base, and Cole Williams crossed home plate for what appeared to be the tying run. However, the second base umpire said Jarrod Hastings interfered with the defense, calling the final out of the game and Brownsboro’s season.
After winning Game 1 7-4, Pleasant Grove took a 1-0 victory in Game 2 to sweep the series.
Game 2 was scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning. Pleasant Grove took the lead with an RBI single by Keaton Russo to score Twisdale. Russo passed Jackson Cobb rounding first base and was called out for the second out to take away what would have been a double.
Braydon Ballard struck out Ben Harmon to strand Cobb at third.
After Ballard grounded out to lead off the seventh, Williams singled. Williams stole second and then advanced to third on a wild pitch that was ball four to Hastings to set up the game-ending runner’s interference call.
Ryan Galvan pitched seven shutout innings, allowing four hits with five strikeouts.
Ballard pitched six innings for Brownsboro. He allowed one run on three hits with two strikeouts — both in the sixth inning.
In the first game, Pleasant Grove got nine hits and seven RBIs from the top five hitters in its batting order to take a 7-4 win.
Cobb got the game started with a leadoff triple. Harmon knocked him in with an RBI single to give Pleasant Grove a 1-0 lead. Harmon had another single and RBI in the contest and also made several plays with his glove and arm.
Brownsboro tied the game in the bottom of the second with an RBI single by Ballard.
The Hawks came through with two outs again in the top of the third with a two-run single by Marshall Cox to go up 3-1.
Brownsboro got an RBI triple from Kelton Jay in the bottom of the fourth to make the score 3-2. Ballard then hit a grounder to Harmon at third, and Harmon fired home to get Jay at the plate for the second out.
In the top of the fifth, Seth Hopkins had an RBI double and scored on Harmon’s bunt that ended up in a Brownsboro error.
Brownsboro ended closer in the bottom of the sixth with RBI single by Ballard and Cole Williams — both with two outs.
Cox gave his team and pitcher Marshall Oubre some insurance with a two-run double in the top of the seventh. Oubre sat the Bears down in order in the bottom of the seventh to give the Hawks the Game 1 victory.
Oubre pitched the final 2 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on two hits with one strikeout. Nick Voyles was the starter. He allowed two runs on five hits with three strikeouts.
Carson Booth started on the mound for Brownsboro and went five innings. He allowed five runs on seven hits with two strikeouts. Michael McCallie pitched the final two innings.
Ballard led Brownsboro with two hits.
Keaton Russo, Hopkins, Harmon and Cox all had two hits for Pleasant Grove.
Brownsboro’s season ended with a record of 23-7-1.
No. 3 Pleasant Grove (25-4) will take on either No. 10 Kilgore or Wills Point in the regional quarterfinals.
