Bears down Hornets

BEARS DOWN HORNETS

The Bears opened with the 10-4 lead. The Hornets answered with a 9-0 run and took the 13-10 lead. Chance King gave Brownsboro the lead back at 14-13 with four straight points. Athens gained the lead at 15-14 with Rhe’jhi Sherfield’s layup before Gage Wehrmann’s three-pointer made it 17-15 in favor of the Bears. Rowdy Godwin tied it at 17-17 with 38 seconds in the first quarter, but Tylor Johnson’s assisted field goal gave Brownsboro the 19-17 lead after the opening period. Jarrod Hasting’s three-pointer and Johnson’s field goal built the lead to 24-17. The Hornets used a brief 5-2 stretch to trail 26-22 with 5:39 until the break. With the Bears up, 32-24, Godwin, Sherfield and Aryn Rodriguez trimmed the Brownsboro lead to 32-30. The Bears would take the 38-32 lead at halftime. Brownsboro dominated the third quarter by outscoring Athens, 21-6, for the commanding 59-38 lead. Rhe’jhi Sherfield injured his knee and did not return. The Hornets would attempt one more push as they opened the fourth quarter with a 9-3 run to trail 62-47 with 4:21 remaining. Wood, Hastings and Johnson contributed to a 6-2 run for the 68-48 lead. Athens would score six more points to trail 68-54, but time ran out and Brownsboro defeated the Hornets by that final score. Rowdy Godwin and Rhe’jhi Sherfield led Athens with 24 and eight points. Brownsboro had four double-digit scorers: Johnson with 18, Hastings with 16, King with 14 and Wehrmann with 10. The Hornets drop to 14-14 and 1-6 in district play while the Lady Hornets fall to 23-11 and 4-4 in district. The Bears improve to 12-13 and 4-3 in district play while the Bearettes improve to 24-9 and 5-4 in district. Athens returns to action tonight at 6 and 7:30 pm at the Canton Eaglettes and Eagles. Brownsboro will host the Mabank Lady Panthers and Panthers at 6 and 7:30 pm.
