Lady Hornets fall to Bearettes

LADY HORNETS FALL TO BEARETTES

Athens basketball hosted Brownsboro on Saturday for a district showdown, as the Lady Hornets lost to the Bearettes, 59-36, on Senior Day and the Hornets lost to the Bears, 68-54. LADY HORNETS After a back-and-forth start, Athens led 8-5. Brownsboro used a 7-0 run from Kentoya Woods, Kristen Downey and Paris Miller to lead 12-8 with 2:55 in the first quarter. Makiyah McCollister halted the run with her three-pointer to trim the lead to 12-11. Shakayla Warren’s two free throws with 40 seconds built the lead to 14-11, but Kyra Dawson drained a free throw with 25 seconds and the Lady Hornets trailed 14-12 after the first quarter. McCollister tied it at 14-14, but Alexis Rumbo and Woods’ respective free throw and field goal extended the Bearette lead to 17-14. With Brownsboro leading 19-17, they created breathing room with six straight points to lead 25-17 with 3:38 until halftime. Tamya Hubbard and McCollister trimmed the deficit to 25-21, but not before the Bearettes picked up momentum for another 7-0 stretch to lead 32-21. McCollister put in a free throw with one second left for Athens to trail 32-22 at the break. McCollister sank another free throw out of halftime for Athens to trail 32-23, but a 6-0 run from Brownsboro put the Bearettes ahead 38-23. As McKenzie Hair and Hallie Williams cut the deficit to 38-27 with 1:01 in the third quarter, Alexis Hambrick’s layup with six seconds made it 40-27 in favor of Brownsboro after the third quarter. Woods led an 11-0 run with six points to start the third quarter for the Bearettes to lead 51-27 and they would never trail again as they cruised to the 59-36 road win over the Lady Hornets. Makiyah McCollister led Athens with 19 points. Brownsboro was led by Kentoya Woods’ 21 points and Paris Miller’s nine points.
