COLE WILLIAMS SCORES 5 TDS TO LEAD BROWNSBORO OVER CANTON 62-41 IN DISTRICT OPENER

District openers give every team, no matter their record, a chance to get on the victory train. Brownsboro took a big step in its playoff aspirations Friday night with a 62-41 victory over the Canton Eagles in District 7-4A Division II. The first half began with the Bears' Cole Williams running in a touchdown from 11 yards out. Williams bulled his way in for six more points from three yards out. Williams also returned a kickoff 73 yards for his third touchdown of the half. Gage Wehrmann passed three yards to Chris Simons for the final TD of the half. Jorge Vicente kicked all four extra points. The Eagles countered with two touchdown passes from McGwire Martin to Chris Cade of 37 and 19 yards and one six-pointer to Cooper Smith of 22 yards. Canton’s final touchdown was a 70-yard fumble recovery by Caleb Phillips. Justice Collier kicked one extra point. Martin and Cade each had a two-pointer apiece. Canton led 29-28 at halftime. In the second half, the Eagles got going with a 15-yard pass from Martin to Smith for six points. Martin hit Smith again for 40 yards and another touchdown. The Bears scored with Dakota Harmon running in from five yards out. Wehrmann scored a touchdown from the 15-yard line. Cole Williams added two more touchdowns of 11 and 2 yards. Wehrmann finished the scoring on a touchdown run of three yards. Vicente finished 8 of 9 on extra point kicks. Highlights for the Bears were Williams' five touchdowns and the offensive line play. The passing game of Martin and his receivers carried Canton. The Bears (2-5) will travel to Wills Point leading the district at 1-0, and the Eagles (2-4, 0-1) play Rusk.
