BEARS TAME THE LEOPARDS

The Brownsboro Bears took care of business in their first playoff game. A 72-63 victory over Liberty Eylau pits the Bears (23-5) against Carthage, tentatively Friday night. Carthage defeated Gilmer, 53-48, in their bi-district contest. Brownsboro Bear head coach Brent Smith stated,”This wasn’t our best game, but in the playoffs the main thing is surviving. I feel like having so many great Bear fans supporting us made a huge difference.” The first quarter began with the Bears missing seven of their first eight shots. Throw in numerous turnovers and the Bears were fortunate to have the lead 14-10. Then seniors Kevon Thompson, Jared Gailey and Kenneth Woods took the fight to the Leopards. Woods had 14 points, 13 rebounds, and five assists. Thompson and Gailey both had eight points and four rebounds. Decorian Phillips led L. E. with 12 points. The Bears ended up with a 38-31 halftime lead. The second half was a turnover fest. Uncharacteristic of the Bears, they had 33 turnovers for the game. However, the strong rebounding for the Bears made the difference. Woods with 21 and Thompson, Gailey, and Tylor Johnson had nine rebounds apiece. Leading scorers for Brownsboro were Woods with 21, Gailey with 20, and Thompson with 15. For the Leopards, Phillips ended up with 21 and Kentraille Atkins added 14.
