BROWNSBORO DROPS HEARTBREAKER
Carthage 56, Brownsboro 50
LONGVIEW — The Brownsboro Bears’ standout season came to an end on Friday night at Lobo Coliseum.
Carthage rallied in the fourth quarter to down the Bears, 56-50, in a Class 4A area boys basketball playoff game.
“I’m proud of the effort of our kids, but it just seemed to be Carthage’s night,” Bears head coach Brent Smith said.
The first quarter was fast paced with the Bulldogs making six-point blank buckets to lead 13-8.
The second quarter was all Brownsboro as the Bears outscored the Bulldogs 20-7 to take a 28-20 halftime lead.
Saul Williams came off the bench to provide a huge spark. He scored five points and took down five boards while playing some tenacious defense. The real key was getting Kenneth Woods involved in the game. He came through with 12 points and eight rebounds in the period, while DeWaylon Ingram led Carthage with seven points.
The second half began with the Bulldogs making a barrage of 3-pointers to take the lead. The Bears came back to lead 38-35 at the end of the third quarter.
The fourth quarter was run-and-gun, with the Bulldogs making 21 points to the Bears’ 12.
Ingram led Carthage (16-5) with 26 points followed by Dee Bowen’s 15 points. Woods paced Brownboro (24-6) with 21 with Kevon Thompson scoring 12.
Carthage will play either Canton next week in the regional quarterfinals. The contest is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday at Tyler Junior College’s Wagstaff Gymnasium.
