BROWNSBORO SWEEPS ATHENS IN SUBVARSITY ACTION
The Athens freshman and junior varsity football teams were swept in subvarsity action Thursday against the Brownsboro Bears at Bruce Field.
In the freshman game, Brownsboro won 26-20, while in the junior varsity game, the Bears won 52-28.
The games were the season finales for both teams.
Freshman
Brownsboro 26, Athens 20
The Bears opened up the scoring in the first quarter as Marco Molina scored on a two-yard run with 44 second remaining. The Bears went for two and converted for the 8-0 lead.
The Hornets answered with 33 seconds remaining as Jarred Duff scored on a 56-yard run. Athens missed the two-point conversion for the 8-6 deficit.
Brownsboro took a 14-6 lead into the intermission as Logan Mcle scored on a 19-yard run with 5:29 remaining. The Bears missed the two-point conversion.
Athens cut the deficit to two with 6:45 remaining in the third quarter as Connor Clay scored from 26-yards out. The Hornets went for two as Caleb Bennett scored on the run for the 14-12 deficit.
Molina scored his second touchdown with 8:54 remaining in the game on a 14-yard run. The Bears missed the conversion for the 20-12 lead.
Brownsboro then went up by 14 as Christian Tristan scored from 22-yards out with 4:53 remaining. The Bears went for two, and failed to convert on the run.
Athens scored the final touchdown of the game with 3:14 remaining as Bennett scored from two-yards out. Bennett then found Derek Killingsworth on the pass for the 26-20 finale.
Junior Varsity
Brownsboro 52, Athens 28
The first half was a shootout between the two teams as Brownsboro held a 38-20 lead going into the break.
Athens opened the scoring with 9:43 remaining in the first quarter as Chase Frederich scored on a four-yard run. The Hornets went for two as Frederich found Jaylynn Gualdarama on the conversion for the 8-0 lead.
The touchdown was set up by a fumbled kickoff by Brownsboro, which Athens recovered deep in Bears territory.
On the ensuing kickoff, Brownsboro answered as Christian Featherston blasted his way for 75 yards to the end zone. Ja’dysis Bradley ran in the two-point conversion to tied the game at 8 with 9:33 remaining.
Brownsboro then took the lead with 5:26 remaining in the first as Dakota Harmon went 65 yards to paydirt. The Bears went for two, but failed to convert for the 14-8 lead.
Athens answered to tie the game at 14 just 11 seconds later as Frederich found Gualdarama down the Hornets sideline for 55 yards. The Hornets went for two, but failed on the conversion.
Brownsboro then took a 22-14 lead with 3:36 remaining in the opening quarter. The touchdown came from Harmon on a 10-yard run, as the Bears missed the conversion attempt.
Frederich then opened the second quarter scoring with 5:52 remaining on a three-yard run for the 22-20 deficit. They were unable to score on the two-point conversion.
On the kickoff, Brownsboro answered with a long touchdown to take a 30-22 lead with 5:44 remaining.
Harmon then scored his third TD with 1:43 remaining on a 53-yard run for the 38-20 halftime lead.
On the Bears opening possession of the third quarter, they scored on a 16-yard run to take a 46-20 lead with 8:04 remaining.
Just six minutes later, the Bears scored on a 96-yard run by Featherston for the 52-20 lead.
The Hornets scored the final touchdown with four minutes remaining on a one-yard run by Frederich. Athens went for two and got the conversion on a pass for the 52-28 finale.
